Appeal for sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean

The undersigned non-governmental organizations, public and private bodies, and individuals, aware of the fragility of the Mediterranean, aware that it contains natural, social and cultural values that should be preserved and revalued, and convinced that people have not always acted as they should have done and that this has implied a loss of cultural identity and of the biological and landscape diversity that forces us to act, because we are convinced that tourism is one of the activities with most impact on the Mediterranean.

We favour sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean because we consider that it is a valid process to help achieve a harmonious development of the societies of the Mediterranean coastline.

We favour a tourism that is based on respect for natural, social and cultural values of the space where it is implanted, that should respond to the needs of the visitors and of the receiving populations, preserving what is needed for future development.

For all these reasons, we add our names to the appeal for sustainable tourism and we support MED PROJECT ULIXES 21, FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN and all the activities that are carried out to meet these aims.

We also commit ourselves to act in our own fields of social, labour, administrative and personal participation, and to encourage initiatives to achieve a more sustainable, harmonious, Mediterranean based on solidarity.
