INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS "SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN. THE PARTICIPATION OF CIVIL SOCIETY" 1. Presentation PRESENTATION The Mediterranean is the world's most important tourist destination, but it is one of the areas that has suffered most from mass tourism. The region is turning towards sustainable tourism as a mechanism to combine economic development, a leading role for the tourism industry, and preservation of the natural environment and cultural heritage. There has been much talk in the last few years about the concept of sustainability, though maybe there has not been enough discussion of the problems of putting it into practise, its limitations and the possible solutions. One of the main difficulties raised is to channel the participation of all the agents involved in tourism management. The involvement of civil society is absolutely essential in any discussion of sustainability. The International Congress "Sustainable Tourism in the Mediterranean. The Participation of Civil Society" seeks to open a debate about all these issues, targeted at all those involved in planning tourism; government and local government, the business sector, experts and above all the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are working in their fields of tourism activity and management to implant criteria based on sustainability.
