Two thousand years of history is at an end. We as a people must come to terms

with the end of the second millennium and define our needs for the third.

Let us give our time and support to the youth of Africa. Let us understand that the adults of today's generation were the youth of yesterday - the youth who fought to get us where we are today. Let us understand that poverty is a disease that can destroy our people in this age of greed and avarice. Let us build the link.spiritually, culturally, socially, politically and economically. We believe that those of us who will come forward and make this vision a reality will be on our way to fulfilling the many challenges and responsibilities that our ancestors called upon us to undertake.

The mission of the Twenty-first Century African Youth Movement is to inspire the youth of Africa and its Diaspora to establish a firm spiritual, cultural, social, political and economic link. Please join the discussion group.play your part.and leave the rest to history.

Environment and Development in the Mediterranean Intensive Training Programme for Mediterranean Journalists

Tampere (Finland), August-September 1999

November-December 1999

Introduction

Possibilities for the general public to get information on questions and the situation regarding the environment in the South and East of the Mediterranean remain very limited. To improve this situation we propose an intensive training programme in the field of the environment intended mainly for Maghreb journalists (Tampere) and for those of the Middle East (location still remains open). Journalists from all Partnership, countries are invited to take part in this training.

This training programme will be organised by TAPRI (Tampere Peace Research Institute), by DMJ (Media and Journalism department), both of Tampere University, as well as by REMFOC (Euro-Maghreb Network for Training in Communications skills), Paris-Algiers, and Fortem Internatíonal, Paris-Oran.

Organisations such as Blue Plan (Sophia Antipolis, France) and "Environment and Development" (specialised review, Beirut, Lebanon) as well as a Syrian NGO (Damascus) have expressed their will to join these efforts. In addition, the International Federation of Journalists of the Environment and Università del Mediterraneo (Rome) with its Review RIVE, will contribute to the distribution of the results.

Objectives

The aims of this intensive programme are to give specific training to journalists who already have experience on the environment.

Firstly, the training programme aims to increase their knowledge of the problems of the environment in the Mediterranean. It concentrates on these questions at the local and national level as well as on their international dependence.

Secondly, the training programme aims to improve their capacity to produce texts on the problems of their environment.

Thirdly, the programme aims to facilitate contacts between journalists specialised in questions of the environment in the various Mediterranean countries to increase their expression capacity.

Fourthly, the specific aim is to be able to make the general public and civil society more aware of questions concerning the environment.

Structures and duration

The training phases last a week (7+2 days) each and take place in three phases:

The first phase is devoted to an exposition and exchanges on the environmental problems at regional and local levels.

The second phase is devoted to, identifying, analysing and improving the functions and skills of the environmental journalists of the region.

The last phase is devoted to production by the participants of a booklet on the subject of the seminar.

Place and date

The first phase of this training programme is planned to take place in Tampere under the auspices of the TAPRI in August-September 1999. The second phase will take place in November-December 1999 the place remains still open.

Participants and organisation

For each of the phases about forty participants of various newspapers of their region already having a preliminary professional experience on the subject of the environment are invited. This involves the main national newspapers in Arabic and European languages of various countries such as El Watan in Algeria, Le Matin in Morocco, Le Temps in Tunisia, and Al Ahram in Egypt.

The intention is that all the countries of the South and the East of the Mediterranean are represented among the participants as well as those of Member States of the EU who are interested.

The co-ordinators are the organising institutes as well as the representatives of the organisations which cooperate in this programme. They will be supplemented by some journalists, professionally specialised in questions of the environment.

In Lebanon, the review "Environnement et Développement" which cooperates with this training, has a print run of 28.500 copies and is distributed in 22 countries, the RIVE Review is distributed to almost a hundred Mediterranean universities.
